Wind Farm Modelling

Overview

Focus of the wind farm modelling research is the description of the wake developing downwind of a wind turbine. Different models are used in its description. Aim is to accurately model the flow field (wind speed and turbulence) in the wake. Wake models are the core of a model of the complete wind farm, which additionally calculated the effect of multiple wakes and ambient atmospheric conditions. It is then able to estimate the loss in power output due to wake effects. The results of the ongoing activities have been implemented in the user-orientated FLaP software. An analysis of the statistical properties of the lumped short-time power output is used for the investigation of grid integration of wind farms, with special regard to smoothing effects and the interaction of wind turbines.
