Overview

It is expected that an important part of the future expansion
of wind energy utilisation at least in Europe will come from offshore sites.
The first large offshore wind farms are currently in the planning phase
in several countries in Europe. However, the economic viability of offshore
wind farms depends on the favourable wind conditions compared to sites
on land. The higher energy yield has to compensate the additional installation
and maintenance cost. For project planning and siting, especially for large
projects, a reliable prediction of the wind resource is therefore crucial.
Three main differences can be considered between wind conditions offshore
and on land:
- Compared to land surfaces the roughness of water is very low. This is the
main reason for the favourable wind resource offshore. For modelling of
the offshore wind climate it is therefore important to establish and refine
models for the description of the sea surface roughness.
- The atmospheric stability is the second parameter, which differs greatly
between land and water areas. Its main influence is on the vertical momentum
transport, which is reflected in the vertical wind speed profile.
- A coastline represents a very pronounced roughness change, which gives
rise to a pronounced internal boundary layer (IBL).
Our research is mainly concered with models for a better description of
the sea surface roughness. In contrary to land conditions, the sea surface
roughness depends on the wave field present, which in turn depends on the
wind, distance to the shore, etc. Aim of this project is the development
and validation of a relation for the estimation of the sea surface roughness,
which can be used for offshore wind resource evaluation.

- This research is undertaken in connection with the PhD project of Bernhard Lange.

The PhD project is a co-operation with the Risø National Laboratory,
Denmark.
